This week the Lee Health kidney transplant program reopened as the Lee Health Transplant Institute at Gulf Coast Medical Center. One of just nine kidney transplant centers in Florida, and the only one between Tampa and Miami, the center has more than 150 patients waiting to receive a donated kidney.

A new program for the wheelchair-using athletes and veterans is rolling onto Great Naples YMCA courts. The Adaptive Sports Program is bringing sports like pickleball, tennis, and wiffle ball to what it calls the underserved community of wheelchair-bound athletes.

Sunscreen is more effective than an umbrella at preventing sunburns – but may not be enough to completely prevent sunburns.

Women are drinking more heavily, and alcohol is behind a growing number of their deaths, according to a Washington Post analysis of federal health data.

The number of white women dying from alcohol-related problems rose 130 percent nationwide since 1999; for Hispanic women, alcohol-related deaths grew by 30 percent in that same time frame. Federal health data shows the prevalence of binge drinking among women up by more than 40 percent since the late 1990s, leading to more ER visits and a growing number of accidents, injuries, and chronic diseases.

Researchers at Tampa's Moffitt Cancer Center are testing a vaccine to fight breast cancer,  and they say  that it appears to be working for some patients.
