Tropical Storm Isaac Grows Stronger

Isaac Continues to gain strength

At 2:00 PM the center of Tropical Storm Isaac was located about 135 miles south southeast of Port au Prince Haiti – with sustained winds of about 60 miles an hour.  The storm is moving northwest at about 14 miles an hour.  The storm forecast track has moved a bit to the west – away from the Florida coast.

“Just because a storm happens to be like a hundred miles to the west of where it might have been thought a couple days ago it doesn’t mean you’re out of the woods," said National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen.  "There’s little doubt Isaac’s impact will be felt in the Sunshine State.    You can have very strong winds and very heavy rain even though the center is well removed from where you happen to be.  We don’t want anybody  focusing on any one specific point.  They need to be looking at the bigger picture.”

Feltgen says as Isaac moves over the mountainous islands of Hispaniola and Cuba it will lose some of its intensity – but will regain strength once it moves into the Gulf.  He says Tropical Storm warnings for the Florida Keys may be issued later today.
