Lawmakers seem ready to make it harder for non-homesteaded homes, often with owners who live out-of-state, to be covered by the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance Corporation.
But lobbyists for the private insurance industry say a comprehensive Senate bill probably won't succeed in returning Citizens to being an insurer of last resort.
Citizens has about 1.3 million policies and is working to shed itself of the least risky ones.

McChristian of the Tampa-based Insurance Information Institute says it's scary that Citizens is so large."So you have one company that's the ninth-largest insurer in the U.S. with all of its risk in one state."
The Senate Banking and Insurance Committee is expected to meet next week, the first week of the regular session, to discuss the proposed bill.
