Southwest Florida International Airport announced Thursday its first flights to Mexico begin December 7th.
The Saturday flights to and from Cancun will last until May 15th. The airline MetJet is providing the new service.
Director of Aviation Market Development Carol Obermeier said the hour and a half-long flights will cost about $300 roundtrip.
Obermeier said there is a customer demand for trips to Mexico.
“There’s a lot of really good packages in Cancun tying into hotels,” she said. “So, we have gotten a lot of people request for us to do some Cancun service.”
Obermeier said these initial flights could lead to even more services to Mexico.
“This is really going to help us when we look at numbers and talk to other carriers to do some Cancun service,”Obermeier said. “We’ll actually have numbers saying 150 onboard the flight, 147 a week so we think it’s going to stimulate the demand even more than we have now.
Previously, Southwest Floridians would have to drive to Tampa or Fort Lauderdale for a direct flight to Mexico. They could also connect to Cancun in Atlanta from Southwest Florida International Airport.
