Local Groups Want Feedback On Possible Smoke-Free Living Options

Tobacco prevention groups across Southwest Florida are seeking input from local renters about smoke free living options.

For the next five months, renters in Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota and Manatee Counties can share their thoughts on smoke-free communities.

Tobacco Prevention Partnerships in each county are working together and asking local renters to fill out an online survey. They want to know whether they are interested in having more smoke-free living options.

Robert Ostbye with Tobacco Free Collier said the survey could serve as evidence to property managers that there is a demand for smoke free residential buildings.

He said smoke-free living has become very popular nationwide, but options are scarce in Southwest Florida.

“What we found is that more than 82 percent of Florida adults don’t smoke these days,” he said. “And so far, the market hasn’t been able to catch up and offer smoke free living options for this population.”

Ostbye said there have been some small gains statewide. He said right now there are more than 700 smoke free communities across the state.
