South Florida's Water Troubles Swing from Drought to Floods

Following heavy rains from Tropical Storm Isaac, Lake Okeechobee may need lowering.

The lake's water level has risen 2.5 ft. since Isaac and it's still going up. The extra water is putting pressure on the 70-year-old Herbert Hoover dike.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports the army corps of engineers is looking into draining water from the lake which also serves as the region's back up water supply.

But that's not as easy as it sounds. Lake water can hurt coastal estuaries by altering the delicate balance between salt and fresh water.

Parts of Palm Beach County were soaked with 15 inches of rain when Tropical Storm Isaac passed through last month.
