The Supreme Court's ruling means that same-sex couples have to be treated the same as opposite-sex couples under the federal law. But state law is a different story.
Florida has it's own amendment that does not recognize any other legal union other than a marriage between a man and a woman.State Rep Joe Sauders is one of Florida's first openly gay lawmakers. He says even though this day is a benchmark in history, same-sex marriage supporters still have work to do.
"I think there's some tricky waters to navigate and those waters will probably air on the side of gay-lesbian families but it's not a slam dunk it may be that we see these couples go right by right, agency by agency, at the Federal level to insure that they have the protections that they need."
Saunders was behind a house bill prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity this last legislative session. The bill died in a subcommittee.
