Republican Congressman Mario Diaz Balart made a stop at Ave Maria Law School Wednesday. He briefed the press on his thoughts on whether Congress will approve the President’s request for military action in Syria.

Diaz Balart joined a slew of Congressional Republicans currently not supporting military intervention in Syria.

Diaz Balart, who represents parts of Miami-Dade and Collier Counties, said President Obama doesn’t have a clear enough strategy.

“I think that it is very important that the President make a clear and convincing argument to the American people as what the policy is, the reason for a military strike, what the short and long term policy with Syria is,” he said. “And he has yet to do so. If he wants congressional approval, it is time for the president to make a clear and convincing argument to the American people.”

Diaz Balart said using military force has to be the last alternative for dealing with the Syrian government, which the Obama administration said used chemical weapons against its own people.

Diaz Balart is one of many Republicans in the House voicing misgivings about the President’s plan. POLITICO recently reported that nearly 80 percent of House Republicans, to some degree, oppose launching strikes in Syria.

Congress is currently on recess until September 9.
