FDLE Sends Its Report on Punta Gorda Officer Role Play Shooting to Prosecutors

The Punta Gorda Police Department said it learned Monday that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has sent its criminal investigative report into the death of Mary Knowlton to the State Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors will make a decision on criminal charges. The 73-year-old retired librarian was shot and killed by Punta Gorda officer Lee Coel in August during a role playing scenario.

Punta Gorda City Manager Howard Kunik said the city has established a webpage for information on the incident. He said once the report becomes public, they’ll put it there as well.

“We want all the information out there,” said Kunik. “Whenever we’re allowed to get it out there. No matter how pretty it is or not pretty it is we want it out there.”

The attorney for the company that insures Punta Gorda against claims in cases like this has confirmed to WGCU News that they are in negotiations with the Knowlton family. But at the request of the family, they will not comment on the status of those settlement talks.
