Child Abuse Prevention

As April marks National Child Abuse Prevention Month, we take a closer look at efforts to identify and prevent child abuse in Florida. Following an investigation by the Miami Herald on a series of child abuse-related deaths of children that were already known to the Florida Department of Children and Families, state lawmakers passed large-scale child welfare legislation in 2014 that included some major changes in how DCF operates. We’ll take a closer look at the department’s progress in implementing provisions of that legislation. We’ll hear explore child welfare legislation that could come out of the current state legislative session. We’ll also take a closer look at the role of Child Protection Teams operating right here in Southwest Florida.

Guests:

Sally Beckett, Child Protection Team Program Director for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Southwest Florida

Aaron Stitt, Community Development Administrator for Circuit 20 of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
