As Florida’s 2018 legislative session begins this week, WGCU is launching a weekly series of legislative roundtable discussions for each Monday edition of “Gulf Coast Live!” throughout the 60-day session. These conversations are intended to provide an in depth look at the latest developments in the state capitol and how they impact Southwest Floridians.
They will include conversations directly with the representatives and senators representing our region as well as political science experts, reporters, community leaders and elected officials at the county and city level. Ahead of the official start of session, we sit down with FGCU Political Science professors Dr. Peter Bergerson and Dr. Roger Green as well as Tallahassee Bureau Chief of the Tampa Bay Times, Steve Bousquet for a preview of the hot-button issues expected to dominate this year’s session from environment and education spending to the opioid crisis and juvenile justice reforms. We’ll also explore how the #metoo movement is shaking up the state capital and how the upcoming 2018 fall election could impact lawmakers’ decisions.
