  • Governor Ron DeSantis signed a property insurance reform bill into law, June 11, following a roundtable discussion in Sarasota. Supporters of the measure say it will drive down property insurance rates in the long run, but opponents argue it will do just the opposite as well as make it easier for insurance companies to deny claims.

  • State health officials reported 4,853 new COVID-19 cases and 59 deaths, Wednesday. So far more than 1.75 million people in Florida have received a first vaccine dose and more than two million people have completed the series with two doses. More than 25,000 people have received the single-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine.After vaccine eligibility in Florida expands to include people 60 and older on Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis said he’ll open up eligibility to people 55 and older soon after before eventually doing away with age restrictions altogether.An additional 76 CVS Pharmacy locations in Florida will begin offering vaccine appointments this week including stores in Charlotte, Collier and Lee Counties here in Southwest Florida, and at locations in 21 other counties.Despite pushback from some parents, Collier County School District officials say its mask policy will likely remain in place at least through the end of the current school year.
  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is facing bipartisan criticism of playing politics with the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Southwest Florida. The criticism stems from DeSantis’ recent selection of COVID-19 vaccine pop-up clinic sites in Charlotte and Manatee Counties.
  • State health officials reported 1,317 new cases of COVID-19, Wednesday, raising the statewide total to 58,764 confirmed cases marking the highest single-day increase in cases April 17.The Florida Department of Health reported 36 new coronavirus-related deaths, Wednesday, for a total of 2,566 fatalities including 1,306 deaths in long-term care facilities.Of the 1,081,825 COVID-19 tests that have been performed in Florida so far, 5.4 percent have been positive for the virus.
