Unemployment

  • The U.S. Department of Labor estimated Thursday that 35,960 initial unemployment claims were filed in Florida during the week that ended Oct. 17, down from 47,904 the prior week and 42,306 during the week that ended Oct. 3.
  • State health officials reported 3,309 new COVID-19 cases, Thursday, increasing Florida's total to 726,013 infections. The Florida Department of Health also reported 164 new coronavirus-related deaths, Oct. 8, bringing the statewide death toll to 15,254 fatalities.Of the 5,496,985 COVID-19 tests that have been reported in Florida so far, the overall positivity rate stands at 13.21% and the latest single-day positivity rate increased slightly to 4.56%
  • Meanwhile, the nationwide numbers declined by 9,000.
  • State Health officials reported 2,521 new COVID-19 cases Sunday bringing Florida's total to 683,754 cases. The Florida Department of Health also reported nine new coronavirus-related deaths, Sept. 20, bringing the statewide death toll to 13,459 fatalities.Of the 5,102,203 COVID-19 tests that have been reported in Florida so far, the overall positivity rate stands at 13.4%. The latest single day positivity rate stands at 4.62%.

The Florida Department of Health also reported 147 new coronavirus-related deaths, Sept. 17, bringing the statewide death toll to 13,247 fatalities.Of the 5,018,057 COVID-19 tests that have been reported in Florida so far, the overall positivity rate stands at 13.44%. The latest single-day positivity rate stands at 4.44%.
  • The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday reported 33,821 first-time unemployment claims in Florida during the week that ended Sept. 12, down from a revised 40,256 claims in the previous week.
  • The state anticipates at least 11,000 layoffs will become permanent by the end of the year.
  • Gov. Ron DeSantis announced an additional $300 will be provided for Florida's unemployed.

The seven-day average for numbers of deaths reported in a day is 112. That number has not dropped below 100 reported deaths a day since July 16.
