Artist Wayne White brings his paintings and drawings to the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers. White’s career has taken on many artistic forms including painting, sculpting, animating, puppeteering and set design to name a few.
He won three Emmys for his work on the TV show “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse,” for which he designed the set and created several of the puppet characters. His work on the video for the Smashing Pumpkins song, “Tonight, Tonight,” earned him Billboard and MTV Music Video awards. White’s gallery exhibition opens Sept. 11 with a performance by White that will pay homage to the late Bob Rauschenberg.
For the last 15 years, White has been creating his ‘word paintings’ which consist of generally mundane landscape paintings picked up at thrift stores and painted over with words or entire phrases intended to inject humor into the pretention of the fine art world. WGCU’s John Davis recently sat down with White for a conversation about his career and his approach to art beginning with closer examination of his ‘word paintings.’
Wayne White's Exhibition, "Here Comes Mr. Know-It-All," opens Sept. 11 with an opening reception and performance from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The exhibition will remain on display at the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at Florida SouthWestern State College through Nov. 7.
