With close to 3,000 South Floridians in evacuation shelters, many are weighing their options and choosing alternative shelter methods. The vacation rental company Airbnb is allowing inland homeowners to offer up their housing to those from coastal areas seeking evacuation.
During a morning press advisory, Gov. Rick Scott mentioned the company saying, "Partners like Airbnb are making rooms for free. Visit Florida and Expedia also have listings of open hotels."
This is the second time Airbnb has initiated free, emergency housing. The first was after Hurricane Sandy hit the northeast. However, this is the first time their services have been offered before a disaster.
Currently, the website has close to 36 rooms available for free rentals. The company is still looking for people to offer their housing. If you're interested in hosting, check out their Emergency Accommodations page here.
