Spending Reserves? House Speaker Says No Chance

After Hurricane Irma turned more than 6 million Floridians into evacuees, Senate budget drafters are eyeing state reserves as a way to get communities back on their feet quickly.

But House Speaker Richard Corcoran says that’s not an option.

“Our position would be very clearly stated that where we are at reserves is a minimum number,” he says, “and certainly not something we would tap into.”

Senate Budget chief Jack Latvala questions the point of a rainy day fund if Hurricane Irma doesn’t qualify as a rainy day.

Florida Governor Rick Scott is already dipping into the state’s reserves under his emergency powers.
