August 14 th marks the 83 rd birthday of Social Security. The Florida Alliance for Retired Americans celebrated the anniversary at Tallahassee City Hall by calling on lawmakers to protect the program.

One of the Congressional budget proposals for 2019 would cut Social Security by 4 billion dollars over the next decade. The Florida Alliance for Retired Americans gathered in front of Congressman Neal Dunn’s office to call his attention to the importance of this programs for elder Americans. The group’s Barbara DeVane says preserving social security is a women’s issue.

“We old women --single women especially-- depend upon it to keep us out of the poor house. It’s what’s kept millions of women out of poverty for many, many years,” says DeVane.

The Florida Alliance wants the government to mandate higher-income citizens pay a larger share into the Social Security System. Neal Dunn did not make an appearance at this event.
