The Florida Department of Health in Lee County issued a health advisory on Wednesday after toxic algae was spotted in Boris Canal in Cape Coral. The canal is just east of Surfside Boulevard and just north of Veterans Parkway.

Blue green algae can cause gastrointestinal effects if swallowed. Health officials say children and pets are especially vulnerable and recommend keeping them away from water where blooms are present.

Algae blooms in the state are recorded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the agency reports cases on their dashboard.
