Lawmaker Proposes Funding for Increased Mental Health Counseling and Security Officers in K-5 School

An Orlando state lawmaker has filed legislation that would provide funding to tighten school security and increase mental health care in elementary schools.

Florida Rep. Linda Stewart told Florida Matters that paying for such measures is always an issue. She wants to use taxes from gun and ammunition sales.

"What my bill does is it takes taxes that have to be paid regardless and put – there’s no designated amount – and put portion of that into a Safe School Trust Fund", Stewart explained.

Stewart says the money could help school districts pay for officers and mental health counseling in kindergarten through 5th grade for an early intervention.

House Bill 325 and 327 have been referred to the K-12 Education Subcommittee.
