The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice is beefing up its oversight of teen lock-ups statewide. The move follows charges of abuse by staffers at a girls' detention facility in Milton.
Last year a Milton guard was arrested for battering an inmate, who called the state abuse hotline.
DJJ Secretary Wansley Walters says she won't tolerate such treatment.
"There are several investigations going on right now. I want those investigations to tell us everything that we need to know and anyone that should be held responsible, held responsible", said Wansley.
From now on, DJJ will interview inmates and review surveillance videos immediately after reports of abuse at a lock-up.
