Zimmerman Trial Heads for Second Week of Testimony

The trial of George Zimmerman in Sanford is heading into a second week of testimony.

The former neighborhood watch volunteer is charged with second degree murder for shooting teenager Trayvon Martin in February 2012.

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said last week he hasn't decided yet whether he will put his client on the witness stand.

"It's the state's burden to disprove self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt. If I think they've gotten close to that then I will consider putting on a case, first of all, and a case that will include George's testimony. But we're no where near any of that."
O'Mara says he'll make the decision after the state has finished presenting its case.

He says it's possible the testimony could stretch into a third week.

In the first week of evidence the jury heard from a friend of Trayvon Martin who was talking to him on the phone moments before he was shot and killed.

Other witnesses to testify included a neighbor who heard the confrontation between Martin and Zimmerman. She said cries for help sounded like those of a boy.

However, another neighbor who saw the two scuffling on the ground said he thought it was Zimmerman calling for help.

The prosecution says Zimmerman profiled, followed and murdered Martin as he walked through Zimmerman’s Sanford neighborhood.

Zimmerman says he was attacked, and fired in self defense.
