The Radio Television Digital News Association has awarded the WGCU News team five Edward R. Murrow regional Awards. WGCU competes in RTDNA Region 13, which is comprised of Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Read more and click on the links below to listen to the winning stories:
Topher Forhecz won in the Audio Hard News category for his story Manatee County Agencies Pressured by Rising Opioid Use.
Jessica Meszaros won in the Best Writing category for her story Pine Island Scallop Count Gives Mixed Results.
Tara Calligan won in the Audio Sports Reporting category for her story Fort Myers Bike Polo Holds Tournament for Toys for Tots. This is Calligan’s second win for that story. She also picked up a 1st place award from the Associated Press Broadcaster’s College Contest earlier this month.
Jessica Meszaros also won for Best Newscast during All Things Considered on 11/16/2015 called “What Florida Sounded Like After the Paris Attacks.”
Richard Chin Quee and the news staff won for Best Radio Website for wgcunews.org.
