Student survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting spoke Monday at a meeting of the Constitution Revision Commission in Cape Coral. The CRC meets every 20 years proposing amendments to the state constitution, which voters ultimately decide.
Stoneman Douglas senior Ryan Deitch chastised commission members for looking at their smartphones and tablet devices instead of actually listening as his classmates spoke.
"I'd like to say that this commission meeting, as I have just recently heard of its existence, happens once every 20 years. I am 18 years old. This is the first one I've ever seen. And frankly, I'm not impressed. I've seen several people looking at their smart phones. They might be doing something important, but for something that happens every 20 years, you can put it away for a few seconds," Deitch told the CRC.

Another teen survivor addressed the commission, saying the students are coming to the members because Governor Rick Scott has failed them and the Florida Legislature has failed to take action. Parkland students recently met with lawmakers in Tallahassee urging legislative action to improve school safety and to consider restrictions on access to firearms.
