The National Park Service (NPS) has announced the beginning of the prescribed fire season in the South Florida National Parks and Preserve.

The NPS plans to conduct 23 prescribed fire treatments in Everglades and Biscayne National Parks and Big Cypress National Preserve. Every year prescribed fire treats 50-75% of NPS acreage nationwide, with the majority of the prescribed fires used in South Florida. The fires are meant to help the ecosystems they burn by renewing soil and wildlife habitat, and promoting ecological diversity. They can also help reduce the risk of wildfire to developed areas.
