John Morgan brought his medical marijuana message to Tallahassee today. The Orlando attorney – whose firm employs former Governor Charlie Crist – says he's driving a ballot measure to legalize medical marijuana out of passion.
Morgan told the Capital Tiger Bay Club he learned about pot's therapeutic power when his father was dying of cancer. He says his petition drive isn't intended to boost turnout for next year's Democratic gubernatorial candidate.
"It's really for the terminally ill, the critically ill, the chronically ill", Morgan said. "It's not for someone who's having a bad hair day."
Morgan has said he'll spend up to $3 million of his own money to get the issue on the November 2014 ballot.
Polls show about 70% of Floridians support legalizing marijuana for medical purposes. It takes 60% of voters to pass a constitutional amendment.
