Last week’s shooting at ZombiCon in downtown Fort Myers that killed one man and injured 5 other victims was the latest in a rash of shootings that have been raising concerns and galvanizing public officials and community leaders into exploring causes and long-term solutions.
Last October, five-year-old Andrew Faust, Jr., was killed by a stray bullet that came through his home. 12 year-old Luxury Vance survived three gunshots in August while standing outside her aunt’s Fort Myers home. Two months before that, a 17 year old boy and his uncle were found shot dead outside an apartment complex. On September 23, seven people ranging in age from 5 to 44 were shot in Fort Myers over a 6.5 hour period. Just this past Monday as police continued their investigation into the ZombiCon shooting, another man was shot in an incident not far from Fort Myers Middle School. We’ll get the latest from law enforcement along with faith and community leaders in the Dunbar community on efforts to understand causes and quell the gun violence. Some of those efforts include improving community/police relations, a proposed gun buy-back program and increased funding for youth mentoring and educational opportunities.
