Telemedicine in Florida

Army Medicine

We explore the current use and future potential for treating patients via telemedicine in Florida.  Telemedicine involves healthcare providers treating patients through a live audio and video connection much like Skype.  The technology’s applications are widespread including mental health services, reaching patients in rural areas and even treating strokes.  In this year’s state legislative session lawmakers unanimously approved a bill (HB7087) calling on the state to research and make recommendations about regulating telehealth.  We’ll highlight telemedicine programs here in Southwest Florida with a specific look at how telemedicine can be used to treat stroke patients and what this year’s telemedicine legislation could mean for the future expansion of telehealth.
