Affordable Housing in Florida: Opportunities and Challenges

Mark Moz via Flickr

In this year’s Florida Legislative session, state lawmakers allocated the highest amount of money for affordable housing initiatives in a decade.  That includes $200 million for the State Housing Initiatives Partnership program (SHIP) which provides funds for local housing assistance programs for very low to moderate income households.

We’ll also highlight assistance available through the State Apartment Incentive Loan program (SAIL) which offers competitive loans to affordable housing developers.  Meanwhile, Collier County faces a shortage of affordable and workforce housing and in Manatee County thousands of residents pay more than 30% of their income for housing.  We explore the status of affordable housing throughout Southwest Florida.
