A heart-warming story is coming out of the Marlin's stadium. Player Adam Greenberg signed a one day contract to play with the Miami Marlins Tuesday.
The game was Greenberg's first since his major league debut with the Chicago Cubs in South Florida in 2005. During that game he was hit in the back of the head by the first pitch he saw. And the 92MPH fastball thrown by Marlins pitcher Valerio De Los Santos derailed Greenberg's career.
Greenberg says he had given up on baseball when a Cubs fan called him and proposed the idea of an online campaign to get him an at-bat in the major leagues.
"I'm going, why not”, said Greenberg. “What do I have to lose? I've kind of already given up, on the dream, the dream that I had, forever."
Greenberg struck out Tuesday evening against New York Mets pitcher R.A Dickey. But he still got a standing ovation from the crowd and a bear hug from teammate Jose Reyes. Even though it wasn't quite a fairy tale ending, speaking after the game Greenberg said he was grateful.
"It was magical. The energy in the stadium was something I had never experienced in my life”, Greenberg said. “I don't know if I'll ever experience that again. It was just everyone that was there I think probably felt the same thing."
And the Marlins went on to beat the Mets 4 to 3.
