Exploring Single Sex Education in Elementary Schools

A pair of South Florida lawmakers is sponsoring a bill to explore the effectiveness of single-gender classroom settings in public schools in Florida. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Manny Diaz Jr., R-Hialeah and Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, would establish a pilot program for single-gender classrooms in some districts. Since new rules regarding single-sex education were established by the U.S. Department of Education in 2006, the practice has garnered greater interest nationwide, but opponents of the single-gender education say it’s based on outdated gender stereotypes. We’ll explore both sides.
