Monday, May 1, marks the official start of sea turtle nesting season on many Florida beaches. Starting today and through October, various county along the Gulf Coast require beachfront properties keep their lights off and clear furniture off of beaches as mothers crawl up the beach to lay their eggs.
Monday at 1 p.m., Maura Kraus with Collier County Turtle Protection joins the program to discuss ways the public can make the journey along Southwest Florida shores as easy as possible for these expectant mothers.
Also joining the program is Eve Haverfield with Turtle Time, a local group who patrols our beaches to stake out where nesting activity is happening. We’ll find out about signs of turtle nests, how to report a nest if you happen upon one, and how successful these efforts have been in bringing back the sea turtle population.
