A new agreement between JAXPORT and global shipping companyMaerskLine means more international cargo will be passing through Jacksonville starting next month.

The deal means the port will transport more goods from Asia.

Maersk Line is the largest container shipping line in the world, and with the new agreement JAXPORT is expecting an increase in volume from Northern China and South Korea.

JAXPORT spokeswoman Nancy Rubin says the deal will have a big impact on the seaport’s global reputation.

Rubin said, “For them to have interest in offering regular service to cargo customers through this area simply highlights our growing importance.”

At the same time, a report this month by the Brookings Institution ranks Jacksonville 31st for trade volume among U.S. port complexes.

By comparison, Savannah’s port ranks 13th. It moves more than three times the goods Jacksonville does.

The report also shows Brazil is Jacksonville’s largest trading partner: nearly $4 billion worth of goods travel from that country each year.
