Miami International Airport broke records in 2015.

Last year was a record breaking year for Miami International Airport.

The airport saw its busiest year ever in 2015 when the 44 millionth passengers walked into the airport.

“You know, that’s the size of some South American countries in one year,” says Greg Chin, communications director for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department. “So we’re really proud of what happened,  and to grow by almost 10 percent was really amazing for us.”

He says usually at the airport it’s international travel that pushes the number higher, but in 2015 domestic travel was king. That follows national trends of stronger domestic travel.

Chin also says 25 percent of the growth came from the addition of several new carriers.

Over the next year, the airport hopes to add Eurowings and Scandinavian Airlines to that lineup.

And it doesn’t seem the increased traffic has caused too many problems for the airport. It still has a 79 percent on-time rate.
