Florida students soon will be tested on the Common Core standards, a national guideline for what students must learn from grade to grade. Many parents and teachers are worried that Florida won't be ready when Common Core goes into effect in the 2014-2015 school year.
A big concern is that not every Florida school has the computers and Internet connection to give students the standardized exam, which can only be taken on a computer.
Florida Education Association President Andy Ford foresees both pitfalls and gains for Common Core.
"I think we're moving too quickly", Ford said. "I think the consequences that they're putting in place – if they do hold to those – are going to derail the train, which will be a shame because these are the best standards we've seen in years."
Ford also says Common Core relies too much on testing.
The state is offering a series of summer workshops for teachers to help them prepare for the new system.
