All over the state environmental activists have been working to get a measure on the November 2014 ballot that would make sure land conservation in Florida gets adequate funding-- and this week the campaign cleared its first big hurdle: it collected almost 70 thousand signatures across the state.
Any ballot measure campaign needs to present state officials with 10 percent of the total signatures they need well before their deadline.
Will Abberger is the Chairman of the Florida Water and Land Legacy Campaign—the group working to get the amendment on the ballot.
"The campaign to protect Florida’s environmental legacy is gaining public support across the state and we are well on the way to getting this important measure on the ballot," Abberger said.
The campaign needs to collect almost 700 hundred thousand signatures.
Abberger said the campaign has hundreds of volunteers and support from all over the state.
The amendment -- if passed -- would put one third of the money collected by the state from real estate transactions into a trust fund dedicated to land conservation.
