Texting While Driving Ban Passes Second Committee

The sponsor of a bill that would ban texting while driving says she thinks it will pass this year – on her fourth try. Senator Nancy Detert's bill passed its second Senate committee on Wednesday.

She says House Speaker Will Weatherford – unlike past Speaker Dean Cannon – will give it a hearing.

"We have a really good chance this year", said Detert. "The speaker last year did not like the bill and would not let it be heard in one committee. This year's speaker, I think, will at least allow his chamber to speak."

In fact, the House version, by Representative Doug Holder, is up in the House Transportation and Highway Safety Committee Thursday.

The bills would make texting while driving a secondary offense, meaning drivers would have to be pulled over for something else before they could get a ticket for texting.
