Emergency Managers: Floridians Can't be Complacent about Hurricanes

The 2013 hurricane season starts this Saturday, June first. And the Florida Division of Emergency Management is reminding state residents to have a plan in case a storm hits this year.

Florida hasn't been hit by a major hurricane since the back-to-back seasons of 2004 and 2005.

Deputy Director Mike DeLorenzo of the Florida Division of Emergency Management says residents can’t afford to be complacent.

"Have a plan; know where you are going to go if you need to evacuate", DeLorenzo said. "Have communications set up that you can check on family members, and if you plan to stay make sure that you have 72 hours' worth of supplies."

For detailed tips on what to do, go to the website FloridaDisaster.org. You can find out when to stay and when to evacuate, what to do with pets, and what should go in your disaster-supply kit.
