Archeologists digging in downtown Miami have found evidence of an ancient Native American village known as the Tequesta Village. The site is where MDM Development Group plans to build movie theaters, restaurants and a 34-story hotel on the Miami River.
The city of Miami Historic and Environmental Preservation Board has legal authority over archeological sites. On Tuesday at Miami City Hall it received a report of archeological activity at the site.Dr. William Hopper is the chairman of the board.
"There is new information that has come to light even this last week and we are going to have a special meeting on the 14th of February to consider what options are available to us to preserve this site and work with the developer to see what we can do", Hopper said. "It’s probably the most significant archeological find in the Miami area if not in Florida and the East coast of the United States."
The special meeting will include representatives of the city, county and MDM.
