Tuition Bill Would Give Undocumented Students More Choices

Fotopedia

Right now, Florida International University and Miami Dade College are the only two schools offering in-state tuition rates for undocumented immigrants.

But that could change this week after the state Senate revived a bill which would expand the reduced tuition for some undocumented immigrants.Juan Escalante is an undocumented immigrant in his first year of graduate studies at Florida State University.

He says the bill would math, science and other fields of study for immigrants.

"When this bill does pass and becomes law it will open up the pool of applicants for other top-tier institutions – Florida State, University of Florida. And it will allow undocumented students to seek out programs of their interest."

The Senate could vote on the bill Thursday.

A majority of Senators say they support the bill, as do House Speaker Will Weatherford and Gov. Rick Scott.
