Rape Culture: Zines & Artists’ Books

We delve into the works featured in a provocative new exhibit through Florida Gulf Coast University Library Archives and Special Collections exploring the pervasive issue of rape and sexual assault and how rape manifests in contemporary culture through the world of underground art and writing.  The exhibition, “Rape Culture: Zines & Artists’ Books,” addresses these difficult issues through artist book and zine platforms dating back to the 1970s.

FGCU staff and students spent the last 18 months researching and collecting the writings and artifacts included in the exhibit that span nearly five decades.  We’ll hear from Melissa VandeBurgt, FGCU Librarian and Head of Archives, Special Collections, & Digital Initiatives along with FGCU students Kinsey Brown and Kaley Dietrich who also worked on creating the exhibit for a closer look rape culture, what’s changed and what hasn’t changed.
