At San Carlos Park Elementary, Governor Ron DeSantis announced $2 million has been awarded to support local education foundations in six school districts hardest hit by the storm.

The funds, more than $200 million through the School Recognition Program, will go to 1,400 schools across the state that demonstrated student growth and teaching excellence in the 2021-22 school year. To be eligible, schools must receive a school grade of “A” or improve at least one letter grade from the prior year.

Photos posted Monday showed damage at Lee County schools on Pine Island, Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach. School superintendent Dr. Christopher Bernier, i a video posted to Facebook Monday, outlined several aspects of what the county schools are doing including a food distribution event and making plans to restart school despite the buildings that have been damaged.

Quick action by a Lee County Sheriff's Office deputy helped save the life of an infant who had started choking as her mother was waiting in the school drop-off line at Three Oaks Elementary School.

Wrote the plaintiffs: “Throughout Florida, schools are taking extraordinary measures to purge any trace of LGBT people from schools, and teachers are afraid to show any support for LGBT students.”

The 49% pass rate was down from 51% in 2021.
