There are several areas to watch for in the tropics in the wake of Hurricane Cristobal. The closest disturbance to Florida is located in the western Gulf of Mexico. It is gradually strengthening, but is not expected to move toward Florida. As it nears the Lesser Antilles, Invest 97 continues to appear disorganized and weak. The system is forecast to move west into the Caribbean this weekend, where it is given a low chance of formation in the next 5 days. Farther out in the Atlantic, a stronger tropical wave has a medium chance of developing this weekend as it moves off the west coast of Africa. None of these tropical waves pose an immediate threat to Florida in the next five days.
Tropics Remain Active, but No Threat to the U.S.
