Reporter Debrief: "Florida schools cover up crimes: Rapes, guns and more."

According to an investigation by the South Florida Sun Sentinel, published earlier this month, some Florida school districts are not reporting crimes happening on campus, which they are required to do, according to Florida Department of Education guidelines. The problem is, there is no enforcement mechanism backing up those guidelines, so school districts face no repercussions for not reporting. According to the story, many serious -- and minor -- offenses are never reported, and lots of schools are reporting no incidents at all: whether it be bullying, or trespassing, just nothing. Well, when we come across great investigative journalism like this that affects people in our listening area we like to shine extra light on it, so that’s what we’re doing. We're joined by Scott Travis, he’s an education writer with the Sun Sentinel; and John Maines, a database editor for the paper.
