A Busy Hurricane Season Already

As Louisianans and those in Western Palm Beach County continue to dry out after Isaac last week, officials say August was one of the most active on record for storm development in the Atlantic.

Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, and Leslie; Those 8 named storms last month - 4 of them becoming hurricanes - tied an August record set in 2004, and are 5 more than average for the month.

Forecaster John Cangiolosi at Miami's National Hurricane center says that doesn't portend a more active September. But he does say we are now in the heart of the Atlantic season.

"This is the time of year that we look just about everywhere in the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean...By next month, in October, more of our attention starts to get focused back towards the western half of the basin", said Cangiolosi.

Through the first half of the Atlantic season - June, July, and August - a total of twelve named storms formed.

Of the 5 hurricanes, none have been major, meaning category 3 or higher.
