Fla. Lawmaker Crafting Anti-Hazing Bill

Pam Champion lost her son Robert, the Florida A&M drum major, to hazing last year.

She says Congress needs to make tough anti-hazing laws become national policy.

“That federal law should be across the country – everybody – doing the same thing, walking to the same music and dance as far as dealing with hazing”, said Champion.

Congresswoman Wilson helped make hazing a felony in Florida and thinks she has a national solution. Her legislation would cut off financial aid for student’s involved in hazing. It also would restrict state’s federal highway funding if they don’t institute anti-hazing laws. Wilson says a part of her effort is to broaden the dialogue after Champion’s death.

“Hazing is deadly and the time for Congress to address this epidemic of hazing is now”, Wilson said.

Today Congresswoman Wilson is hosting a forum on hazing with fraternity and sorority leaders in Washington where she hopes to gain new input before introducing her legislation.
