On the 41st anniversary of Roe versus Wade, gubernatorial candidate Nan Rich and pro-choice activists rallied at the state capital in Tallahassee on Tuesday. Rich was joined by the former president of the National Organization for Women, Patricia Ireland, and Palm Beach County Tax Collector Anne Gannon.
The US Supreme Court ruled in 1973 that women should have access to abortion as part of their right to privacy. But Ireland says the ruling has been steadily losing ground.
"Access to abortion when pregnancy results from a rape, or when women's health is at risk – all of this and more is under attack", Ireland said.According to the pro-choice Alan Guttmacher Institute, more abortion restrictions were enacted from 2011 to 2013 than in the entire previous decade.
Ireland called Rich a strong supporter of abortion rights, whose voting record as a state lawmaker proves it. But with abortion still such a hot-button issue, there's no predicting how it might affect Florida's gubernatorial race this year.
