The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) announced this week 13 restaurants in the state that went an entire year without one food safety violation.
Four of those restaurants are located in Lee and Collier County.
However, that’s out of thousands of restaurants in the state.
Some restaurant operators told the DBPR the terminology used by inspectors might be one of the reasons there aren’t more restaurants on the list.
In the past, operators have used the terms “critical” and “non-critical” to describe violations, but they say the latter designation has given restaurant operators less of an impetus to fix a problem. This makes it more likely that they will get written up during their next inspection.
Sandi Poreda, a spokesman for the DBPR, says her agency decided to change the words they use to classify food safety violations.
“What we think this will allow operators and consumers to do is really understand the severity of the violations and have a better understanding of what the inspector is observing,” Poreda explains. “So, we think this will make it much more user-friendly.”
Attention to violations will now be classified as "high priority," "intermediate" or "basic.”
