Wildlife on Sanibel now have a few more acres to romp around on safely thanks to the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge.The Society recently closed on a 21.5-acre parcel of land adjacent to Bay Drive thanks to a donation from the family Pine Rock Foundation of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The land will become part of the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

All Lighthouse Beach Park parking lots on Sanibel will be closed for contractors starting April 22 to replenish the berm at the lighthouse. Work is expected to be completed by May 1.

The project has proceeded enough that the Lighthouse Beach parking lot (Bayside) has been reopened. Sand is being now placed in the final two areas.

Crews began adding sand along Sanibel’s coast as part of the Sanibel beach renourishment project. Approximately 400,000 tons of sand will be brought in over the next four months to help replace sand that was pushed off by Hurricane Ian. The first truckloads of sand began arriving on the island Tuesday morning around 6 am.

For the remainder of December, motorists crossing the Sanibel Causeway should expect periodic lane closures and traffic shifts during the nighttime/overnight hours of 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. throughout the week.

Only one lane will be open for specified time periods on the Sanibel Causeway during weekends in the first half of December to accommodate restortation work on the damage caused by Hurricane Ian.

As a part of the emergency restoration efforts on the Sanibel Causeway, Florida Department of Transportation crews will resume lane closures on segments of the causeway this weekend.
